Go Green!
We're painting a bright green future!
We have a recycling station in our foyer for parents to conveniently drop off select donations. Magazines, scrap paper, plastic bottle tops, and paper towel/toilet paper rolls can all be re-purposed. But, our all time favorite is newspaper--we use it to cover the tables when kids paint and it makes for a speedy clean-up.
Our school uses eco-friendly
FreshAire paint (Home Depot), which is Greenguard certified for use in schools. This helps reduce indoor air pollution and is good for people with allergies or asthma. (If you've never watched them mix this paint, it is THE coolest process.)
Custodial cleaning embraces
Clorox GreenWorks, which is made from plant-based ingredients.
- Classrooms received glowing reviews. Our Energy Star light bulbs last at least 10,000 hours (about 7 years of regular use).
- "The greenest house is one that already exists." -newspaper ad We use recycled furniture and antiques throughout our school.

GOrganic!
This is a bonus: Our school is located within walking distance of Whole Foods! We use organic produce and products whenever we feasibly can. We wish we could always use only organic foods, but in some cases the cost, availability, and consistency of the product is prohibitive.
We also believe in "stealth health", or adding health
ier ingredients to already healthy foods that kids enjoy, like adding wheat germ to mac-and-cheese, or invisible spinach puree to pancakes. (This concept works on spouses, too.) For more ideas, check out this cookbook by Missy Chase Lapine:
The Sneaky Chef.
Here are some pictures from our super-creative chef's imagination including fruit flowers and bananapillars.

AT HOME (Thanks to The School Box for "green" ideas.)
As people embrace mindful living, their homes and habits are changing. Parents can help at home by...
Incorporating recycling as a family activity.
Using "green" cleaners.
Explaining the reasons behind eco-freindly purchases and conservation behaviors.
Planting a "family" tree every year.
Composting yard and kitchen waste. (World Market and Williams Sonoma have cute, compact, carbon filtered containers)
Buying and promoting organic, healthy foods.
We want to be part of the solution, not the problem. We'd love families to share with us innovative ways to minimize resource consumption and protect the environment.
